Growing up in Minneapolis, Morris Day befriended Prince Rogers Nelson. The pair attended the same high school and, as teenagers, were bandmates in Prince's group, Grand Central. Prince grew as an artist and, about seven years later, selected Day as the lead vocalist for The Time, a cool funk band created to contrast Prince's more soulful R&B sound. Soon after, Morris Day and The Time were cast in Purple Rain (1984), which captured the exploding Minneapolis music scene at its peak. Between 1981 and 1990, The Time released four studio albums, with tracks like "Get It Up," "777-9311," and "Jungle Love." After three albums with The Time, Day also launched a successful solo career. The combined sales of Morris Day's solo work and The Time's records exceed 10 million units.
